for solo alto trombone and trombone choir
I’m always on the lookout for good titles, and while visiting a used bookstore in Ithaca, New York, I found the ones used for this piece. The first is the title of a book of poems by Samuel Hazo, and the second comes from a Metropolitan Museum of Art activities kit for children, by Catherine Roehrig.
The piece itself was written at the request of my colleague at the University of Louisville School of Music, Brett Shuster, for a recital in the spring of 2002. Both movements are composed more-or-less as musical arches. The first movement is slow and expressive, while the second movement if boisterous, even rowdy. There is no direct connection with the sources of the titles, other than trying to express the general moods.
